Ingredients

1 lb ground beef

2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons butter

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

1 cup beef broth

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon dried thyme

1 teaspoon sugar

Salt and pepper to taste

4 hamburger buns, toasted

1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook them until they become caramelized and golden brown, about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Once the onions are caramelized, add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.

Push the onions to the side of the skillet and add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula as it cooks, about 6-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Sprinkle the flour over the beef and onions, stirring well to combine. This will help thicken the mixture.

Gradually pour in the beef broth, followed by Worcestershire sauce, thyme, sugar, salt, and pepper. Stir well and bring the mixture to a simmer. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes, or until slightly thickened.

While the mixture is simmering, preheat your broiler on high.

Once the beef mixture is ready, divide it among the toasted hamburger buns. Top each with a generous amount of shredded Gruyère cheese.

Place the loaded buns under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, just until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Watch carefully to avoid burning.

Remove from the oven and garnish with chopped parsley before serving.
